FlySafair is seeking a results-driven Manager: Base Airports (HLA/NLP/HDS/BFN) to oversee airport operations, manage service providers, and ensure the highest levels of operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. The role is responsible for managing airport-related activities while ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, safety standards, and company policies.

Job Description

The Manager: Base Airports (HLA/NLP/HDS/BFN) will oversee daily airport operations and coordinate with internal teams and external service providers to ensure smooth operational performance. Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and approve purchases and invoices related to Passenger Services, Crew, and Technical departments.
  • Monitor and control operational costs associated with delays and missed flight connections.
  • Motivate and justify additional contracts required for purchasing and operational needs.
  • Implement and monitor cost-saving initiatives across airport operations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external service providers.
  • Address matters of shared operational interest with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure strict adherence to company policies and operational procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation including air and ground safety regulations and labour laws.
  • Achieve punctuality targets and maintain high On-Time Performance standards.
  • Ensure emergency response plans are established and maintained for the relevant airport stations.
  • Plan, organise, and motivate for operational resources when required.
  • Coordinate delay management processes and, when necessary, attend the airport during severe operational disruptions.
  • Facilitate regular operational audits to ensure service delivery and safety standards remain at the highest level.
  • Ensure a smooth and positive passenger experience across all stations.
  • Promote customer service performance indicators and Net Promoter Score (NPS) objectives as directed by management.
  • Ensure external service providers deliver customer service aligned with FlySafair standards.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to supervisors and operational staff.
  • Maintain effective communication channels among staff and operational teams.
  • Ensure staff receive the necessary training and possess the required operational skills.
  • Monitor and manage staff performance.
  • Resolve outstanding staff queries and operational concerns.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels to support operational demands.
  • Initiate and manage recruitment processes in collaboration with the Human Resources division.
  • Oversee staff scheduling and daily operational activities.
  • Enforce workplace housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure staff adhere to the company’s code of conduct.
  • Represent Safair Operations at Airline Operators Committee meetings at relevant stations through third-party service providers.
  • Represent Safair Operations at Local Baggage and Pilferage Committee meetings.
  • Represent Safair Operations at Local Airport Security and Safety Committee meetings.
  • Represent Safair Operations at Local Bird and Wildlife Committee meetings.

Job Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification (Essential).
  • Diploma or Degree in Travel and Tourism, Aviation, or a related field (Advantageous).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience within the aviation industry, including at least 5 years in a management role.
  • Experience in baggage handling, passenger handling operations, and cargo handling.
  • Experience in non-scheduled flight operations.
  • Knowledge and experience in commercial ground handling agreements.
  • Familiarity with IOSA and ISAGO audit requirements.
