Job Purpose

The Accountant is responsible for managing all accounting functions and overseeing accounting administration staff, ensuring compliance with the organisation’s financial policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Budgeting and Forecasting

• Assist Management in preparing annual project budgets.
• Monitor project cash flow and advise Management on potential shortfalls.
• Submit weekly cash flow movement reports for all projects to the Finance Manager.

Financial Management, Review, and Reporting

• Ensure timely submission of monthly donor reports in line with project requirements.
• Oversee adherence to procedures for authorisation, recording, and reconciliation of transactions by accounting administration staff.
• Initiate daily payment batches in the accounting system, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Prepare and submit monthly consolidated VAT returns to the Finance Manager.
• Support Management with upgrades or changes to the accounting system.
• Review and update financial reports to meet donor and statutory requirements.

General Ledger and Accounts Payable

• Verify and initiate daily accounts payable payments, ensuring accurate allocation.
• Resolve all AP reconciling items from the preceding month in collaboration with Finance Administration Staff.
• Reconcile petty cash accounts, project fuel cards, and credit cards weekly and process reimbursements.

Cash Management

• Monitor and replenish credit cards, project fuel cards, and Amex cards.
• Process foreign currency payment requests.
• Maintain communication with bank representatives regarding company cards (credit, fuel, or Amex).

Qualifications and Experience

• BCom Degree in Accounting and completed articles.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an Accountant role, preferably with experience managing finance staff.
• Strong knowledge of financial accounting policies and procedures.
• Ability to operate effectively in a dynamic environment.
• Experience with Pastel Evolution accounting software.
