Purpose of the Role
Transnet is seeking a highly driven and experienced Category Manager to lead the development and execution of category strategies across key spend categories. This role is accountable for delivering value through strategic sourcing, supplier negotiation, performance management, and driving procurement transformation aligned with business objectives. The Category Manager will also support internal stakeholders and ensure consistent procurement performance within a collaborative and high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities

Lead the development and continuous improvement of purchasing strategies for assigned spend categories

Analyse internal demand and external supply market trends to shape category strategies

Execute sourcing strategies, including supplier selection, negotiation, and contract finalisation

Manage the full procurement lifecycle for the category, from strategy through to contract drafting and implementation

Ensure optimal performance of the procurement categories in line with defined KPIs, including cost savings and service delivery

Identify supplier risks, assess impact, and implement mitigation plans

Establish strong supplier relationships and ensure effective performance management

Promote procurement excellence across the business by aligning with internal stakeholders and procurement leaders

Contribute to change management strategies that enhance procurement capability and transformation

Provide research and analysis on supply markets and supplier capabilities to support strategic decision-making

Monitor contract adherence and savings realisation in collaboration with SRM and contract management teams

Ensure alignment with operational divisions’ performance goals
Qualifications and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (a postgraduate qualification such as an MBA is advantageous)

6 to 10 years of relevant experience in a large enterprise, including 3 to 5 years in a middle management role

Practical experience in leading procurement teams and implementing sourcing strategies

Sound knowledge of public sector procurement regulations including PFMA and PPPFA
-
MCIPS certification and CIPS membership are advantageous
