Transnet Vacancies – Day Hoist Operator

Position Purpose
The Day Hoist Operator is responsible for operating the helicopter hoist during day operations with a vertical operating reference of the hoist cable. This includes hoisting a marine pilot or cargo from the cargo hook while positioning the helicopter over a moving, rolling, and pitching vessel. The role requires maintaining situational awareness of hazardous conditions surrounding the operating area and safely landing or dropping the hoisted marine pilot or cargo onto the vessel, in line with TNPA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Civil Aviation Regulations, and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005. The position ensures port efficiency in the operation of the TNPA helicopter service.

Position Outputs

  • Perform testing of truck and aircraft fuel samples.

  • Conduct pre-flight inspections of the TNPA helicopter and hoist.

  • Collect data on helicopter hoist bumper cycles and engine cycles.

  • Daily helicopter compressor wash maintenance.

  • Weekly maintenance of helicopter hoist cable wash/retention.

  • Operate the fuel truck and refuel the helicopter.

  • Provide helicopter safety briefings for authorized boarding passengers.

  • Assist at other bases with helicopter hoist operations as needed.

  • Support the engineering department when requested.

  • Capture hoist log data.

  • Safely position the aircraft over a moving, rolling, and pitching vessel during day operations.

  • Safely conduct offshore hoisting of marine pilots on stationary and moving vessels under day operations according to TNPA Aviation SOP.

  • Safely sling cargo onto moving, rolling, and pitching vessels during offshore operations.

  • Perform Search and Rescue, VIP, and Casualty evacuation flights in accordance with TNPA requirements.

  • Ensure cabin safety during all flight operations.

  • Provide first aid during patient transfers when necessary.

  • Comply with SAMSA and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005.

  • Ensure no unauthorized personnel are carried on board the helicopter.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12.

  • English language proficiency.

  • 1 year of general aviation experience.

  • Proof of previous hoisting experience on helicopters will be an advantage.

  • Operational knowledge of TNPA marine pilot services will be advantageous.
