Transnet Vacancies – Helicopter Day Captain

TRANSNET is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Helicopter Day Captain to join its aviation team. This role involves commanding helicopter operations during the day and co-piloting during night operations, with full responsibility for flight safety, crew management, and regulatory compliance in alignment with SACAA CARs and TNPA SOPs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute daytime flight missions based on marine traffic, port demands, and directives from Port Control.

  • Oversee aircraft preparation, including resource allocation and loading schedules for marine pilot transfers and port-related tasks.

  • Conduct thorough pre-flight checks and deliver safety briefings in line with stringent safety standards.

  • Ensure safe transfer of marine pilots to and from vessels within the South African Port system.

  • Maintain strict adherence to South African Civil Aviation Regulations, SAMSA guidelines, and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005.

  • Participate in emergency operations, including the evacuation of accident victims and distressed individuals.

  • Execute port-related flights based on TNPA and client specifications, including route planning and coordination with Air Traffic Navigation Services and Port Control.

  • Record flight data, manage operational schedules, and report mission efficiencies.

  • Assist in delivering a 24-hour seamless operation to support TNPA’s business goals and customer needs.

  • Promote safety to minimize incidents, ensuring timely responses to Port Control directives for improved ship turnaround times.

  • Support training and development of Day Captains, Co-Pilots, Cadet Pilots, and related personnel.

  • Receive operational updates from Night Captain and perform Line Proficiency Checks as needed.

  • Operate helicopters under all weather conditions, ensuring safety and adherence to TNPA SOPs and aeronautical standards.

  • Navigate safely using instruments in IMC conditions, ensuring secure landings in challenging environments.

  • Manage multi-crew cockpits and inflight emergencies with professionalism and technical expertise.

  • Comply with national certification standards and contribute to skills transfer initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Valid CPL or ATPL-H license

  • Night Rating and Instrument Rating

  • 2000 hours total flight time

  • 500 hours on turbine helicopters

  • 350 hours on multi-engine helicopters

  • 250 hours on A109 helicopter (advantageous)

  • Minimum of 3 years’ operational experience

  • Familiarity with TNPA marine pilot services is preferred
