Parmalat is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lab Coordinator to join our quality team. Based at our facility, this role is key to maintaining laboratory integrity, ensuring testing accuracy, and upholding compliance with quality standards. The Lab Coordinator will be responsible for managing laboratory operations, overseeing staff training and competency, handling non-conformances related to testing, and supporting the Quality Manager with audits, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The successful candidate will ensure that lab processes align with ISO 17025 standards and other regulatory requirements, while playing a vital part in driving operational efficiency and product integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate all scheduled lab activities and ensure timely completion of required reports.

  • Investigate customer complaints and non-conformances related to laboratory testing, propose corrective actions, and conduct trend analysis.

  • Maintain and evaluate the lab’s quality system, including Laboratory Process Controls and Control Charts.

  • Ensure all lab personnel are trained, competent, and assigned clear job responsibilities.

  • Maintain comprehensive records of training, competencies, and job descriptions for laboratory staff.

  • Conduct job observations and identify skill gaps for further training and development.

  • Ensure the availability and accuracy of written procedures and working instructions for all lab activities.

  • Assign qualified team leaders to each lab section (Microbiology and Chemistry) to ensure leadership and accountability.

  • Train staff in new procedures, oversee the operation of lab equipment, and diagnose equipment issues when they arise.

  • Review and sign final laboratory reports and Certificates of Analysis, confirming data validity and compliance with GLP principles.

  • Assist with budget planning and management in collaboration with the Quality Manager, including identifying resource and equipment needs.

  • Evaluate lab equipment for maintenance or replacement and assess alternatives before final procurement decisions.

  • Manage lab consumables to ensure availability and continuity of operations.

  • Lead daily lab team operations including scheduling, discipline, and adherence to work standards.

  • Communicate key lab activities and findings to the Quality Manager and relevant departments such as production.

  • Organise and manage inter-laboratory tests in a round-robin format to ensure testing consistency and validation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Microbiology, Food Science, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in microbiological testing and laboratory operations.

  • Proven experience in quality management systems and compliance with ISO 17025; SANAS Lab Systems course completion is essential.

  • High attention to detail, observational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Strong leadership, initiative, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.

  • Proficiency in front-end computer systems and laboratory data management tools.
