Transnet Vacancies – Marine Engineer Officer
Purpose of the Role:
Transnet is seeking a skilled and experienced Marine Engineer Officer to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the engine room and associated machinery. The successful candidate will be responsible for watchkeeping duties, executing planned maintenance, managing repairs, and upholding operational availability and safety standards of the vessel.
Key Responsibilities:

Perform engine room watchkeeping, including monitoring temperatures, pressures, and other indicators

Start up plant and machinery, ensuring proper warm-up procedures

Execute scheduled maintenance tasks and attend to mechanical breakdowns

Maintain accurate records of engine hours and update the engine logbook regularly

Train and mentor subordinates in engine operations and maintenance practices

Manage inventory of spare parts and maintain updated spares movement records

Inspect and maintain all safety equipment onboard

Conduct fuel and ballast transfers as required
Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12 or N4 qualification
-
Completed apprenticeship or cadetship (minimum 30 months)

Certificate of Competency as an Engineer Officer in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act

Minimum 12 months of sea time
-
At least 6 to 12 months’ experience as a Marine Engineer Officer

Willingness to work on a 12/24-hour shift over a 14-day cycle, living on board the vessel
