Position Purpose
The Trainee Cargo Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and controlling cargo operations, including loading, off-loading, stacking, gate control, and weighing. This involves checking, inspecting, and reporting on all dispatched and received containers by road or rail. All actions are captured on the NaVis system in line with Terminal Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring the efficient and safe handling of cargo.
Position Outputs

Perform physical checks on incoming trains, including verifying container, wagon, seal numbers, reefer cables, and identifying damages. Instruct General Workers to unlock twist locks and oversee safe off-loading by the Operator. Capture off-loading data on the Hand-Held Terminal (HHT). Report discrepancies, damages, or contamination immediately to Supervisors.

Perform physical checks on outgoing trains, ensuring the correct wagon types, wagon numbers, and carrying capacity are recorded. Confirm the load sheet with the container list to be loaded, instruct General Workers to set twist locks, and plan the loading sequence. Oversee the safe loading by the Operator, ensuring correct locking of twist locks and capturing the loading data on HHT.

Control the stacking and de-stacking of containers by identifying stack allocations, overseeing the stacking process, and ensuring safety procedures are followed. Record and verify stacking positions, using either the manual yard report or HHT.

Apply terminal safety operating procedures in all activities, including reporting unsafe conditions and emergency situations. Complete the Container Inspection Report (CIR) for emergencies or near-misses and participate in safety symposiums and Indaba’s.

Conduct in-gate checks of road haulers, verifying export documentation, driver, vehicle, trailer, and conducting thorough container inspections. Direct the external driver to the appropriate parking or stacking bay and instruct Operators on delivery or collection.

Operate the weighbridge, ensuring export documentation is verified, and conducting container inspections. Weigh and record the combination weight on the weighbridge software (Klerkscale), ensuring accurate data capture in the NaVis system.

Perform out-gate checks of road haulers, verifying documentation, container details, and inspecting for damages. Ensure correct capturing of out-gate process details in the NaVis system and report visible damages.
Qualifications and Experience

Educational Requirements: Grade 12

Experience: Be prepared to undergo Cargo Coordinator training and demonstrate competency upon completion.

Other Requirements:

Prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments during the selection process and annually.
