Purpose of the Job
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for managing and controlling the end-to-end picking function and inventory control within the warehouse. This role oversees both permanent and outsourced picking teams, ensuring that all processes are consistently followed, productivity targets are achieved, and customer orders are picked accurately and on time. The Warehouse Supervisor plays a critical role in maintaining discipline, driving operational efficiency, enforcing system-driven picking, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards while supporting the broader warehouse team to deliver a reliable and cost-effective service.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
• Supervise, guide, and support permanent and outsourced picking staff
• Maintain a controlled, disciplined, and efficient working environment
• Conduct daily check-ins with staff to monitor progress, productivity, and challenges
• Ensure all picking activities adhere to approved processes and warehouse standards
• Confirm that system-driven picking is followed and stock is selected from the correct bays
• Perform random accuracy checks on items and quantities to ensure high picking accuracy
• Ensure productivity targets are consistently met
• Work closely with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules
• Ensure picking is completed on time to prevent delays, additional transport costs, and customer service issues
• Monitor the condition and availability of picking equipment such as pallet jacks and handheld scanners
• Ensure all administrative processes within the picking area are correctly followed
• Provide daily reporting on productivity, progress, delays, challenges, and accuracy levels
• Maintain accurate records of staff performance and any deviations from standard procedures
Warehouse Supervision
• Lead, train, coach, and motivate picking teams
• Enforce company policies, disciplinary procedures, and health and safety regulations
• Conduct regular team meetings, toolbox talks, and performance feedback sessions to drive continuous improvement
Reporting and Documentation
• Prepare daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory control
• Monitor and track KPIs including order accuracy, picking turnaround times, and stock discrepancies
• Maintain accurate documentation for internal controls and external audit requirements
Health and Safety Compliance
• Ensure strict adherence to occupational health and safety standards
• Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions where required
• Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard-free warehouse environment
Housekeeping
• Maintain high housekeeping standards across the warehouse at all times
• Ensure aisles, picking areas, and storage zones are free from obstructions and hazards
• Implement and enforce daily housekeeping schedules
• Monitor compliance with hygiene, safety, and waste disposal standards
• Conduct regular inspections to identify and address cleanliness or safety risks
• Ensure tools, equipment, and PPE are correctly stored and well maintained
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field (preferred)
• Proven picking experience within a warehouse environment
• Previous supervisory or team leader experience
Skills and Competencies
• Strong supervisory and people-management skills
• Sound knowledge of WMS, MS Office, and inventory control practices
• Good literacy and numeracy skills
• Strong planning, coordination, and organisational abilities
• System-driven and process-focused mindset
