Job Description

Sea Harvest is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join its fishing fleet. The role is responsible for ensuring vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with SAMSA, maritime regulations, and company policies.
Purpose of the Role
To ensure vessels are fully operational, mechanically reliable, and maintained to the highest safety and regulatory standards while at sea.
Key Performance Areas
Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure vessels are mechanically fit to complete voyages without unnecessary returns to port
- Implement and oversee preventative maintenance for all machinery and equipment
- Coordinate timely repairs and report performance issues to the Skipper and Superintendent
- Ensure correct spare parts and quantities are available to maintain operational efficiency
Operations, Watchkeeping and Bunkering
- Ensure all machinery operates effectively during sailing and trawling
- Maintain hold temperatures within specified requirements at all times
- Enforce recognised watchkeeping practices
- Ensure correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils are loaded
Administration
- Ensure engineering stores and supplies are adequate for each voyage
- Maintain and submit all required documentation in line with SAMSA and company standards
- Communicate operating and maintenance procedures clearly to engine room staff
- Keep the planned maintenance system updated and accurate
Standards and Safety
- Take full responsibility for engine room safety and machinery
- Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures and comply with safety and housekeeping standards
- Ensure machinery operation complies with environmental and maritime regulations
- Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys, inspections, and investigations
Management and Training
- Develop and mentor engineering officers and crew through onboard training
- Manage discipline and grievances in line with company policy and maritime legislation
- Conduct continuous assessments of engine room staff and engineering cadets
Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (Unrestricted)
- Valid STCW certification
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience as Second Engineer (Unlimited)
- Previous experience as Chief Engineer (Unlimited) will be advantageous
- Strong technical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Proven leadership, personnel management, and safety awareness
- Technical report writing ability
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken
- Ability to follow company procedures and maritime regulations consistently
