Job Description
Sea Harvest Group Limited is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join our fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. The Chief Engineer will ensure vessels operate safely and efficiently in compliance with SAMSA, maritime regulations, and company policies, while overseeing all engineering operations on board.

Key Responsibilities

Repairs and Maintenance

  • Ensure vessels remain mechanically capable for the full voyage without unnecessary port returns.
  • Implement preventative maintenance procedures and carry out repairs effectively.
  • Notify the Skipper and Superintendent of any performance changes requiring immediate attention or shore-based investigation.
  • Maintain adequate spare parts inventory to support continuous vessel operations.

Operations, Watchkeeping, and Bunkering

  • Ensure all machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling.
  • Maintain hold temperatures at required specifications.
  • Adhere to recognized watchkeeping practices.
  • Ensure correct grades of fuel and lubricants are loaded.

Administration

  • Ensure engineering stores and supplies meet the requirements of each voyage.
  • Maintain all voyage documentation in line with SAMSA and company standards.
  • Inform engine room staff of operating procedures and equipment maintenance.
  • Update the planned maintenance system regularly.

Standards and Safety

  • Take full responsibility for engine room staff safety and machinery operation.
  • Ensure all personnel are trained in emergency procedures, safety practices, and housekeeping standards.
  • Operate machinery in compliance with international, national, and company marine environmental regulations.
  • Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys, inspections, and investigations.

Management and Training

  • Develop skills and confidence of engineering officers through on-board training.
  • Implement disciplinary procedures at sea according to company policy and regulations.
  • Manage subordinate grievances according to established procedures.
  • Assess engineering staff and cadets on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

  • Valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (>2000KW Fishing).
  • Valid unrestricted SAMSA Medical Certificate.
  • Valid STCW documentation.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as Second Engineer (unlimited); previous Chief Engineer experience advantageous.
  • Strong technical, problem-solving, and personnel management skills.
  • Safety awareness and ability to enforce standards effectively.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to follow company procedures and provide clear leadership on board.
