Main Purpose of the Role
The Social Worker develops and implements targeted social service initiatives to address the unique challenges faced by adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) related to HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and overall wellbeing. The role advances the rights of girls and women through advocacy, policy implementation, and recommendations for policy reform. The Social Worker links clients to statutory child protection, psycho-social support, economic strengthening programmes, and screens for psychosocial and mental health challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Psychosocial Programmes and Support
- Conduct area-specific needs assessments to identify service gaps for AGYW
- Identify community platforms, safe spaces, hotspots, and learning institutions to introduce programmes and deliver services
- Adapt and integrate HIV prevention, testing, treatment, TB, GBV, STI, and SRH programming
- Facilitate adherence counselling, contemplation groups, economic empowerment sessions, and parenting cohorts
- Conduct full client assessments and provide trauma or crisis counselling
- Follow up on referrals and ensure clients are linked to appropriate care services
- Manage psychosocial program improvements and maintain secure client records
- Draft SOPs and train peer educators and staff on psychosocial service delivery
Support and Advocacy for Adolescents and Young People
- Collaborate with advocacy officers and ambassadors to promote harm reduction objectives
- Develop and manage monthly event calendars and maintain updated gatekeeper lists
- Ensure safe and inclusive facility environments for service users
- Sensitize facility staff to reduce discrimination and stigma
- Empower service users while holding them accountable
- Represent the programme in community and stakeholder forums
- Identify, report, and investigate human rights violations, activating legal support where necessary
Monitoring and Organisational Engagement
- Gather client feedback and maintain confidentiality while reporting to management
- Keep operational project diaries and attend regular meetings, briefings, and debriefing sessions
- Mobilise communities for programme events and strengthen community platforms and networks
- Support stigma and discrimination reduction campaigns and scale up advocacy initiatives
- Accept additional responsibilities as delegated by management
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Social Work
- Registration with SACSSP or relevant professional council
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working with adolescents and young people
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s License with PDP
- Knowledge of HIV, TB, and women’s sexual and reproductive health
