Job Purpose
Sanlam Vacancies is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Advisor to join the Litigation and Dispute Resolution function. This role is responsible for managing complex litigation matters, providing practical legal advice to business stakeholders, and supporting effective dispute resolution strategies across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Litigation and Dispute Resolution
- Represent the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Unit in internal and external stakeholder engagements
- Manage litigation matters, including court proceedings and alternative dispute resolution processes
- Analyse disputes and negotiate, implement, and manage appropriate resolution strategies
- Identify and promote practical and cost-effective dispute resolution alternatives
Legal Advisory and Drafting
- Draft and review legal documents, including pleadings, notices, and particulars of claim
- Provide timely, practical, and business-focused legal advice to internal stakeholders
- Research, prepare, and draft legal opinions as required
- Assess regulatory developments and determine their business impact
Stakeholder and Resource Management
- Facilitate and manage the involvement of external legal counsel
- Mentor and train legal advisors within the team
- Build strong relationships with internal business units and external stakeholders
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications
- LLB or higher law degree
- Admitted attorney or advocate
Experience
- Minimum of 7 years’ litigation experience, including court appearances and alternative dispute resolution
Knowledge and Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of legislation impacting the financial services sector, including the FSRA, Insurance Act, Prudential Standards, FAIS Act and Code of Conduct, and retirement funds legislation
- Sound understanding of contract drafting and negotiation
- Proven ability in legal research and drafting of legal opinions
- Solid knowledge of litigation and ADR processes, including drafting of pleadings and notices
- Understanding of commercial contracts and the financial services industry
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
