Paralegal – Anova Vacancies
Main Purpose of the Role
The Paralegal plays a critical role in strengthening community-based human rights interventions by providing legal and strategic support to Human Rights Ambassadors and Reactors. The role focuses on reviewing and assessing reported human rights violation cases, offering basic legal guidance, and ensuring accurate referrals or escalations to Legal Officers when advanced legal intervention is required. The Paralegal also supports advocacy initiatives, stakeholder engagement, training, and supervision to promote access to justice and effective redress.
Key Responsibilities
Human Rights Advocacy and Networking
- Advocate for the human rights of adolescents and young people, including adolescent girls and young women, key and vulnerable populations
- Develop and implement quarterly district advocacy plans in collaboration with programme teams
- Apply harm reduction principles across all advocacy initiatives
- Engage communities and district stakeholders including clinics, SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, and Department of Social Development
- Identify service gaps affecting target populations and integrate solutions into advocacy strategies
- Build and strengthen district-level referral networks and partnerships
- Represent the programme professionally in meetings, forums, and stakeholder engagements
Sensitisation and Training
- Identify and engage district and sub-district stakeholders for sensitisation initiatives
- Facilitate sensitisation and human rights training workshops on a quarterly basis
Legal Information, Advice, and Referrals
- Support and monitor the documentation of human rights violations
- Assist community members with affidavits, statements, and formal complaints
- Provide legal information and guidance on appropriate remedies within scope of practice
- Facilitate referrals to Legal Aid South Africa, the Human Rights Commission, Department of Justice, shelters, psychosocial, and health services
- Ensure follow-up with clients and service providers to track case progress and resolution
- Identify complex cases and refer them for further legal review or intervention
Gender-Based Violence Support
- Provide trauma containment counselling using WHO LIVES principles where required
- Ensure survivors receive immediate medical care, including referrals to Thuthuzela Care Centres within required timeframes
- Support safety planning and placement in available places of safety
- Assist survivors with opening cases at SAPS and provide court support when necessary
Supervision and Support of Human Rights Ambassadors/Reactors
- Ensure quality control of all case documentation
- Train Ambassadors/Reactors on standard operating procedures and data tools
- Review cases for accuracy, completeness, and correct categorisation
- Provide technical support on case documentation, follow-up, and closure
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Paralegal Studies, Human Rights, or a related legal or social justice field
- Accredited community paralegal training or recognised human rights and access-to-justice courses
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in advocacy, human rights, lobbying, or public health or HIV-related programmes
- Proven experience in conducting training sessions and workshops
