Category Buyer
Pick n Pay Careers is seeking a strategic and commercially-minded Category Buyer to drive the performance of assigned categories. This role is responsible for developing and executing category plans aligned with company strategy, category group guidelines, and customer needs, ensuring growth, profitability, and operational excellence.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- 3–5 years’ retail and category management experience
- Knowledge of general merchandise within relevant categories advantageous
- Strong financial acumen; SAP knowledge is an added advantage

Key Responsibilities:
Negotiation:
- Develop and present factual, rational, and compelling arguments to achieve win-win outcomes
- Manage disagreements and conflicts using diplomacy and emotional control
- Anticipate negotiating roadblocks and objections, engaging in counter-negotiations as needed
Category Strategy:
- Develop and recommend category-specific business strategies to drive growth
- Evaluate merchandising plans and recommend modifications based on findings
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance performance, quality, and cost efficiency
Category Performance:
- Maintain strong knowledge of assigned category, industry trends, and competitive environment
- Develop and execute tactical buying plans aligned with category growth strategies and overall business strategy
Supplier Relations:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers
- Communicate performance expectations, track metrics, and hold suppliers accountable
- Develop and implement contingency plans to close performance gaps
Private Brand Strategy & Development:
- Implement and execute private brand category strategies aligned with overall business objectives
Merchandise Knowledge:
- Apply knowledge of Pick n Pay merchandise, promotions, pricing, and sales to optimize category performance
- Develop merchandising solutions to achieve business goals and influence financial outcomes
- Monitor industry trends and market forces to inform category decisions
