Job Description

The General Assistant is responsible for delivering excellent customer service within the store while ensuring effective merchandising, accurate shelf price labelling, and high standards of housekeeping in the designated area of responsibility.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with at least one year of relevant work experience, or

  • Grade 12 with no prior work experience

  • Ability to communicate clearly in English and the dominant local language

  • Valid South African ID or work permit

  • Ability to perform basic calculations accurately

  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure

Key Performance Areas

Customer Service

  • Advise and assist customers with product selection and general enquiries

  • Address and assist in resolving customer complaints professionally and efficiently

Merchandising Standards

  • Merchandise bulk stock safely in line with the store layout plan

  • Ensure the allocated area is fully merchandised according to approved layouts and planograms

Housekeeping

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and obstacle-free work area

  • Ensure stock is merchandised promptly after receipt

  • Allow safe and easy customer access through aisles at all times

  • Maintain correct shelf price labelling within the area of responsibility

  • Complete required housekeeping checklists, including canteen and toilet/shower schedules

Safety (OHSA) Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety regulations and ensure proper use of safety equipment

  • Maintain safe merchandising of racking and bulk stock for customers and colleagues

  • Report any safety concerns or discrepancies to the Store Manager

Stock Loss Control

  • Identify and report damaged stock within the area of responsibility to the Store Manager
