Role Purpose
The Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and assessing client risk profiles to determine appropriate insurance decisions. This includes consideration of insurable interest, occupation, medical and financial factors, part-time activities, and travel or territorial exposure.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite risk applications in line with the client’s overall risk profile, including existing and prior cover
- Assess and manage sub-standard cases with clear and effective communication
- Request and evaluate underwriting and limit requirements
- Place cases in accordance with reassurance treaties and applicable guidelines
- Deliver an excellent customer experience through proactive written and telephonic communication
- Remain informed on industry trends, regulatory updates, and developments in AI and analytics
- Continuously strengthen underwriting expertise, processes, and technical knowledge
Qualifications
- Grade 12
- A relevant qualification will be advantageous
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ medical and/or financial underwriting experience
- Experience in underwriting processes will be advantageous
- Exposure to underwriting systems and software
- Understanding of underwriting and reinsurance policies
- Exposure to financial underwriting and/or business insurance
Knowledge Requirements
- Sound knowledge of medical conditions and prognosis
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Strong knowledge and interpretation of financial statements and questionnaires

Additional Information
The role may require overtime during peak periods, depending on business volumes. The position is based in the Western Cape or Gauteng.
