Peer Educator – Anova Vacancies

Main Purpose of the Role
The Peer Educator mobilises adolescents and young people (AGYW) in the community, creating awareness and demand for health services. Acting as the first point of contact, the Peer Educator builds trust, introduces programme services, provides health education and harm reduction information, distributes condoms, and refers clients to nurses, HTS, and other relevant services across community organisations, recreational spaces, schools, media platforms, and safe spaces.

Key Responsibilities

Peer Mobilisation and Outreach Activities

  • Introduce the programme and available services to clients in the community
  • Identify and engage community platforms, including organisations, recreational areas, schools, and spaces where AGYW gather
  • Map community sites and establish regular points of engagement
  • Build trusting relationships with peers and groups, ensuring respectful and supportive interactions
  • Participate in stigma reduction and community dialogue sessions
  • Provide referrals to Nurses, HTS, Linkage Officers, Advocacy Officers, and Social Auxiliary Workers
  • Report daily outreach statistics to the Area Coordinator
  • Deliver health education and assess the risk of clients reached
  • Manage a cohort of clients and ensure they access appropriate services
  • Conduct regular follow-ups with your cohort
  • Distribute harm reduction packs, condoms, and lubricants as needed
  • Provide TB screening information and link clients to care for ART, TB, STIs, and social support
  • Offer PrEP choices for high-risk young women and support viral load monitoring in line with 95-95-95 targets

Project Support and Administrative Tasks

  • Assist with stock-taking and stock control
  • Support project activities when not engaged in outreach work, including document photocopying and distribution
  • Participate in weekly and monthly planning and reporting
  • Assist in other project-related activities as requested by management

Role Requirements

  • Matric qualification or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with adolescent and young people programmes
  • Knowledge of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services is an advantage
