Purpose of the Role
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and controlling the end-to-end picking function and inventory control within the warehouse. This role manages both permanent and outsourced picking teams, ensuring that processes are consistently followed, productivity targets are achieved, and customer orders are picked accurately and on time. The position is essential in maintaining discipline, driving efficiency, ensuring system-driven picking, and upholding safety, compliance, and productivity standards while supporting the broader warehouse operation to deliver a reliable and cost-effective service.
Key Responsibilities
Warehouse Operations
- Supervise, guide, and support permanent and outsourced picking staff.
- Maintain a disciplined, controlled, and efficient working environment.
- Conduct daily check-ins with staff to review productivity, progress, and challenges.
- Ensure all picking activities follow approved processes and warehouse standards.
- Verify system-driven picking and correct stock selection from designated locations.
- Perform random accuracy checks to ensure correct items and quantities are picked.
- Monitor and achieve required productivity and output targets.
- Collaborate closely with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules.
- Ensure picking is completed on time to prevent delays, additional costs, and service disruptions.
- Monitor and report on the condition and availability of picking equipment.
- Ensure all administrative processes within the picking area are accurately completed.
- Compile daily reports covering productivity, accuracy, delays, and operational challenges.
- Maintain accurate records of staff performance and process deviations.
Warehouse Supervision
- Lead, coach, train, and motivate picking teams.
- Enforce company policies, disciplinary procedures, and health and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular team meetings and toolbox talks to encourage continuous improvement.
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory performance.
- Track key performance indicators including order accuracy, picking timelines, and stock variances.
- Maintain documentation to support internal and external audit requirements.
Health and Safety Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions where required.
- Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and hazard-free working environment.
Housekeeping
- Ensure the warehouse remains clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Keep aisles, picking areas, and storage zones free of obstructions and hazards.
- Implement and enforce daily housekeeping schedules.
- Monitor hygiene and safety compliance, including proper waste and packaging disposal.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address cleanliness or safety risks.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and PPE are correctly stored and well maintained.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven picking experience within a warehouse environment.
- Previous supervisory or team leader experience.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong supervisory and people management skills.
- Knowledge of warehouse management systems, inventory control practices, and MS Office.
- Good literacy and numerical skills.
- Strong planning, coordination, and organizational abilities.
- System-driven and process-focused mindset.
