Job Purpose
The Human Rights Ambassador improves the legal literacy of young women by educating them on their rights to confidentiality, informed consent, and protection against discrimination, violence, and sexual exploitation. This role supports client referrals to social grants, medico-legal post-violence care, and GBV services, while coordinating human rights advocacy and campaigns with civil society. The Human Rights Ambassador also promotes healthy behaviours and prevents risk behaviours among adolescents through targeted interventions at individual, facility, and community levels, enhancing uptake of HIV testing, linkage to and retention in treatment, and access to prevention services such as PrEP and sexual and reproductive health services.
Key Responsibilities
Health Promotion
- Engage communities and advocate for rights awareness, gender-transformative approaches, GBV prevention, and stigma reduction.
- Identify and create platforms for human rights promotion and community education, including community organisations, recreation spaces, schools, and other gathering places for AGYW.
- Map and document key spaces where AGYW congregate to identify opportunities for rights promotion.
- Educate young women on their rights to confidentiality, informed consent, and protection from discrimination, violence, and exploitation.
- Conduct age-appropriate, adolescent-centred health talks using IEC materials in facilities and communities.
- Promote B-wise usage and registration, and educate adolescents on their health-related rights and responsibilities, particularly regarding HTS, AYFS, SRH, and PrEP.
- Demonstrate practical healthcare practices, including condom use and handwashing.
- Conduct demand creation for outreach services and address barriers to youth accessing contraceptives and GBV services.
Linkage to Care
- Act as a navigator for adolescents accessing legal and healthcare services.
- Record human rights violations and refer clients for access to justice.
- Support referrals to social grant, medico-legal, post-violence care, and GBV services.
- Raise awareness of CBO service packages and strengthen referral pathways.
- Promote HIV testing uptake and linkage to care, ensuring follow-up for scheduled appointments.
- Recruit and maintain adolescents in Youth Care Clubs and support groups to improve retention and adherence.
- Facilitate Youth Care Clubs and create safe spaces for adolescents to discuss social and health-related issues.
- Support disclosure and adherence, referring adolescents with unsuppressed viral loads to appropriate care.
Health Facility Engagement
- Participate as part of the multidisciplinary facility team to meet programme targets.
- Represent adolescents in clinic health committees/forums.
- Develop adolescent-friendly forums to incorporate their opinions, concerns, and expectations.
- Act as a voice for adolescents in the facility and community on HIV-related issues.
- Promote Adolescent and Youth Friendly Service provision.
Community Engagement
- Support and coordinate human rights advocacy and campaigns alongside civil society.
- Serve as a link between adolescents, local clinics, CBOs, and other community health services.
- Establish or strengthen links with schools and engage in outreach programmes.
- Represent ANOVA Health Institute at youth gatherings and platforms.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completed Grade 12.
- Local youth between 19 and 35 years of age.
- Currently unemployed and not engaged in formal education.
- Experience in public speaking and leadership roles is an advantage.
- Experience working with adolescents in facilities, communities, or schools is preferred.
- Previous participation as a LoveLife GroundBreaker is an advantage.
