Chief Engineer
Sea Harvest is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Engineer to join its fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. The Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and fully operational condition of vessels in compliance with SAMSA, maritime regulations, and company policies.
Job Purpose
To manage and oversee all engineering operations on board, ensuring vessels operate safely and effectively while maintaining high standards of mechanical performance, safety, and compliance.
Key Performance Areas
Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure vessels remain mechanically capable for full voyages without unnecessary returns to port
- Implement preventative maintenance procedures and ensure timely repairs
- Report any changes in vessel performance to the Skipper and Superintendent
- Ensure the availability of correct spare parts to maintain operational efficiency
Operations, Watchkeeping, and Bunkering
- Ensure all machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling
- Maintain hold temperatures at specified levels
- Enforce adherence to recognized watchkeeping practices
- Ensure correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils are loaded
Administration
- Plan and manage engineering stores requirements for each voyage
- Ensure all documentation meets SAMSA and company standards
- Inform engine room staff of operating procedures for all equipment
- Maintain and update the planned maintenance system
Standards and Safety
- Take full responsibility for engine room staff safety and machinery operation
- Ensure emergency procedures and good housekeeping practices are followed
- Operate machinery in compliance with International, South African, and company marine environment regulations
- Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys, enquiries, and investigations
Management and Training
- Develop skills and confidence of officers through on-board training
- Manage discipline at sea according to company policy and Merchant Shipping Act
- Handle subordinate grievances following the grievance procedure
- Assess and mentor subordinates and engineering cadets continuously
Qualifications, Experience & Competencies
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW certification
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as Second Engineer (unlimited)
- Prior experience as Chief Engineer (unlimited) is advantageous
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Personnel management and safety awareness
- Technical report writing skills
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Ability to follow company procedures and instructions
