Occupational Health Nurse – Sasol Careers

Purpose of Job
Manage and oversee the on-site occupational health clinic within the mining operation. Implement and maintain comprehensive occupational health programs, deliver clinical care, conduct health surveillance, and provide health education to employees, ensuring compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations.

Key Accountabilities

• Oversee daily clinic operations, including resource allocation, scheduling, and facility management.
• Conduct health surveillance, primary health care, TB/HIV testing, and counseling in line with legislative requirements.
• Implement and monitor workplace health programs to prevent, detect, and manage occupational diseases and injuries.
• Maintain accurate medical records while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
• Provide emergency care and coordinate evacuations or referrals to appropriate medical facilities.
• Collaborate with mine management, SHE teams, and external agencies to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and company policies.
• Participate in risk assessments and workplace inspections to identify and control health hazards.
• Report and investigate work-related injuries and illnesses, completing statutory reports as required.
• Facilitate health education initiatives and train employees on occupational health risks and safe work practices.
• Advise management on occupational health legislation and best practices.
• Contribute to the development and review of mine health and safety procedures and emergency response plans.
• Ensure maintenance, calibration, and availability of medical equipment and consumables.

Formal Education

• Registered Professional Nurse with additional qualification in Occupational Health Nursing (SANC).
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and relevant regulations.

Working Experience

• 3–5 years’ experience in occupational health, preferably within the mining industry.
• Experience with workplace health risk assessments, health surveillance protocols, and clinical record management.

Working Conditions

• On-site mining clinic environment; may involve travel.
• Potential exposure to occupational health risks (dust, noise, chemicals).
• Use of PPE as required.
