Chemical Plant Operator (CPO) – Sasol Careers

Purpose of Job
The Chemical Plant Operator (CPO) coordinates and directs maintenance and repair services for a specific process within a production line. This includes control panel management, complex troubleshooting, and ensuring safe, efficient, and continuous plant operation.

Key Accountabilities

• Provide regular feedback to the supervisor on work progress.
• Participate in risk assessments in line with legislation and company requirements to enhance safety.
• Maintain good housekeeping and follow waste disposal procedures.
• Work independently while understanding business operations, targets, and KPIs.
• Apply and maintain safety standards in the working environment.
• Participate in shift handover meetings and communicate effectively with all team members.
• Identify personal training and development needs and incorporate them into the PDP with approval.
• Coach learners and provide subject-matter expertise on plant operations.
• Deliver presentations on specific plant equipment and procedures.
• Conduct IMS inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability.
• Work effectively as part of a team and support other disciplines through feedback and collaboration.
• Take a lead role during emergencies to restore plant operations efficiently.
• Contribute to toolbox talks to improve plant safety awareness.

Formal Education

• Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English.
• Occupational Trade Qualification/Certificate.

Working Experience

• Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience in chemical plant operations.

• Strong process optimization and results-driven mindset.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Knowledge of production resource and risk management.
• Proficiency in project quality management and procedure implementation.
• Ability to manage complexity and ensure accountability in all tasks.
• Skilled in equipment utilization and production process oversight.
