The successful candidate will work closely with the Captain to ensure compliance with aviation regulations, company procedures, and the highest safety standards while delivering excellent service to passengers.

Job Description

Operations

The First Officer (JHB, DBN, HLA, CPT) plays a critical role in supporting flight operations and ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the safety and efficiency of each flight operation.
  • Monitor the aircraft’s flight path, systems, and operational performance.
  • Conduct all required checks and procedures before, during, and after flights.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments, external service providers, and passengers when necessary.
  • Assist with aircraft navigation and operational control during flights.
  • Ensure full compliance with aviation regulations, company policies, and operational procedures.
  • Uphold the company’s commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Complete and submit accurate operational and legal documentation.
  • Assume command of the aircraft if the Captain becomes incapacitated.
  • Remain updated on SACAA regulations, international aviation laws, and company operational manuals.
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant sections of the company Operations Manual necessary for fulfilling duties.
  • Support the Captain with operational and administrative responsibilities related to the flight.
  • Assist in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, conduct, and professional appearance.
  • Carry out duties according to FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including aircraft limitations and performance requirements.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the Captain when required.
  • Continuously monitor the aircraft’s navigation and terrain clearance to ensure safe operation.
  • Provide advice, assistance, and operational support to the Captain for safe and efficient flight conduct.
  • Maintain high standards of discipline, professionalism, and representation of the company.
  • Contribute to maintaining a strong level of expertise, teamwork, and morale among the flight crew.
  • Ensure consistent compliance with the company’s operations manual.

Pre-Flight

  • Review the planned flight route, briefing materials, and weather forecasts.
  • Familiarise with runway conditions at destination and alternate aerodromes.
  • Complete all required checks and documentation according to the Operations Manual.
  • Collaborate with the Captain to review flight planning information including fuel requirements, alternates, and operational restrictions.

In-Flight

  • Execute or monitor normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as outlined in operational manuals.
  • Monitor all flight instruments and systems, ensuring proper procedures and techniques are followed.
  • Cross-check critical flight data such as altitude, speed, heading, and terrain clearance.
  • Notify the Captain immediately of deviations from the planned flight path, hazardous conditions, or abnormal instrument indications.
  • Conduct radio communications as required during flight operations.

Post-Flight

  • Complete all post-flight procedures in accordance with the Operations Manual and Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM).
  • Submit all required documentation and operational reports through relevant reporting systems.

Job Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
  • SACAA Commercial Pilot License (Essential).
  • SACAA ATPL (Preferred).
  • Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential).
  • Boeing type rating (Advantageous).
  • Experience operating commercial jets over 20 tons (Advantageous).
  • Minimum of 1500 flight hours including at least 500 hours multi-turbine time (Essential).
  • Multi-crew flight experience (Essential).
  • No existing medical conditions that affect operational performance.
  • Willingness to sign applicable training bonds.
  • No criminal record and willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable personal transport.
  • South African citizen with proof of identity.
  • Valid South African passport.
  • Ability to work irregular hours according to roster schedules.
  • Strong knowledge of national and international aviation regulations including SACAA and ICAO.
  • Knowledge of Doc 8186 (Essential).
  • Understanding of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing standards.
