Diesel Mechanic – value logistics

Purpose of the Job

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing comprehensive maintenance and repair services on commercial vehicles in accordance with company job cards and manufacturer specifications. The role ensures vehicles are serviced, diagnosed, repaired, and returned to full operational condition while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct visual inspections and onboard diagnostics during pre-diagnosis assessments
• Review and verify workshop job cards for accuracy and completeness
• Adhere to approved repair flat rates and operational standards
• Attend to both office-hour and after-hours breakdowns as required
• Sign off completed job cards upon final inspection and approval
• Ensure all parts and consumables used, including engine oils and related materials, are accurately recorded on job cards
• Prepare tools, equipment, and required parts before commencing work in the service bay
• Perform maintenance services in line with manufacturer specifications and scheduled maintenance plans
• Carry out inspections, calibrations, adjustments, and related technical tasks
• Identify irregularities, deviations, and abnormal wear, and report findings to the Workshop Foreman
• Reset maintenance systems according to internal procedures
• Inspect dismantled components and replace them with new or reconditioned parts as required
• Prepare reusable or reconditioned parts for return to suppliers
• Document and return all unused or defective parts in accordance with procedures
• Compare vehicle condition against standard production configurations and assess technical performance
• Conduct final inspections using appropriate testing and measuring equipment to ensure roadworthiness and reliability
• Maintain professional conduct in all interactions and work activities
• Support operational functions as required
• Comply with company dress code and Standard Operating Procedures
• Maintain daily housekeeping standards in the workshop
• Ensure adherence to all Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Trade-Tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician Qualification

Skills Required

• Ability to maintain a positive professional image of the workshop environment
• Basic understanding of customer usage patterns relevant to technical work
• Ability to apply business principles within the workshop setting
• Competence in interacting professionally with customers related to technical functions
• Ability to implement operational and business standards in daily tasks
• Capability to identify workplace hazards under supervision and follow guidance accordingly
• Ability to apply basic Health and Safety procedures within assigned responsibilities
