Main Purpose of the Role

The Senior Legal Counsel will serve as a strategic partner to the business by delivering seamless, value-driven legal support across multiple business units within DSV in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. The role involves providing expert legal guidance on a broad range of commercial and corporate matters, supporting management with informed decision-making, and ensuring legal compliance across operations. This includes drafting and negotiating contracts, managing legal risks, and collaborating with external legal advisors where necessary.

Qualifications

• LLB Degree (Bachelor of Laws)
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
• Experience with contract management systems

Job Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience in a senior legal role
• Admitted Attorney with at least 2 years of practical experience
• Strong knowledge of transport and logistics law, including contract, corporate, and civil law, as well as statutory interpretation
• Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements locally and across Sub-Saharan Africa
• Solid understanding of legal frameworks and contractual structures within the logistics and transport sector
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to interpret complex legal concepts
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, with the ability to train and guide stakeholders
• Experience managing external legal counsel on litigation and dispute resolution matters
• Excellent command of the English language
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to manage tasks independently and engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels
• Strong time management and organizational skills

Duties and Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of corporate and commercial contracts for suppliers and customers
• Monitor and interpret legislative developments, advising the business on potential risks and commercial implications
• Safeguard company interests through effective risk management and adherence to corporate governance standards
• Lead negotiations with internal and external stakeholders to secure favorable contractual outcomes
• Establish and maintain sound contractual relationships with third parties while minimizing legal risks
• Identify matters requiring specialized legal expertise and coordinate with external counsel accordingly
• Liaise with external attorneys, preparing detailed briefs and managing legal processes
• Oversee litigation matters, providing strategic recommendations and ensuring effective case management
• Prepare legal opinions and conduct in-depth legal research on complex issues
• Ensure alignment with company policies and legal frameworks
