Job Purpose
Sanlam Reinsurance is seeking a skilled Reinsurance Underwriter to underwrite and manage a reinsurance treaty portfolio within an assigned geographical territory. This role focuses on driving sustainable profitability, maintaining strong broker and client relationships, and ensuring underwriting excellence in line with internal governance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Reinsurance Underwriter duties will include, but are not limited to:
Underwriting and Portfolio Management
- Develop, manage, and maintain a profitable reinsurance treaty book within the allocated territory
- Underwrite reinsurance treaties using actuarial analysis, technical pricing, and qualitative underwriting judgement
- Review contract wordings and negotiate terms in line with underwriting guidelines
- Monitor account performance, premium flows, payments, and overall portfolio profitability
Client and Broker Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with reinsurance brokers and clients
- Support existing business while identifying opportunities for growth
- Conduct market visits and prepare detailed meeting reports
Governance and Reporting
- Prepare underwriting reviews for submission to the Underwriting Committee
- Review and submit endorsements and special acceptances for approval
- Ensure accurate system capturing and complete documentation
- Maintain strict adherence to underwriting guidelines and standard operating procedures
Business Performance
- Drive growth and profitability aligned to premium volume, volatility, and profitability targets
- Work closely with pricing and analytics teams to support informed underwriting decisions
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Undergraduate degree with a strong numerical focus such as actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, or commerce
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Treaty Reinsurance Underwriting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Willingness to work during peak underwriting periods, including holiday seasons
- Willingness to travel when required
Advantageous Skills and Experience
- Strong understanding of reinsurance principles, concepts, and structures
- Knowledge of reinsurance wordings and global reinsurance markets
- Solid understanding of insurance risks and reinsurance technical accounting
- Experience in project management
