Job Purpose

Drive competitive and sustainable growth for the Commercial division by leading category strategy, value retailing, and strategic supplier partnerships. This role focuses on growing market share, improving margins, and delivering key business objectives through expert category leadership and strong trading capability in a highly competitive retail environment.

Job Objectives

  • Develop and execute category strategies and operating plans aligned with Commercial and Group priorities.

  • Lead product assortment strategies, driving innovation and “New and Only at Clicks” offerings to position the brand as a destination in health and beauty.

  • Implement space and range principles to deliver impactful in-store execution and seamless digital merchandising across channels.

  • Drive the Value proposition through effective pricing policies, promotion strategies, and trade terms to achieve margin, sales, and customer targets.

  • Define budgets and annual operating plans, monitor performance against KPIs, and course-correct using data-led insights.

  • Build and manage strong supplier partnerships, negotiating competitive trading terms, joint business plans, and service level agreements.

  • Collaborate closely with Supply Chain, Stores, OMNI, Finance, and Marketing to ensure end-to-end execution excellence.

  • Build and lead high-performing teams through effective people management, capability building, and succession planning.

  • Simplify and streamline merchandising ways of working across divisions to improve speed, efficiency, and execution quality.

Functional Expertise

  • Deep category experience within FMCG and health and beauty, supported by a proven trading track record.

  • Strong value retailing expertise with sound commercial judgement.

  • Digital capability across e-commerce, retail media, and data-driven merchandising.

  • Strategic mindset with strong understanding of South African FMCG markets and customer missions.

  • End-to-end supply chain knowledge from sourcing to shelf availability and fulfilment.

  • Financial planning, budgeting, and P&L ownership experience.

  • Expertise in supplier negotiations, co-operative agreements, and joint business planning.

  • Retail management experience, including market trends and competitor analysis.

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including food and product labelling where applicable.

Performance Measures

  • Category sales, margin, and market share growth.

  • Price perception and promotion return on investment.

  • Delivery against supplier trading terms and joint business plans.

  • Delivery of operating plans and improvements in process efficiency.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Relevant degree such as BCom, essential.

  • MBA or postgraduate qualification, desirable.

  • 5 to 8 years’ experience in a senior commercial role within retail or FMCG, with proven results.

  • Demonstrated success in category growth, margin improvement, and supplier negotiations in competitive environments.
