Diesel Mechanic – Value Logistics

Purpose of the Role

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing comprehensive maintenance and repair services on commercial vehicles in accordance with company job cards and manufacturer specifications. The role ensures vehicles are maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance, minimizing downtime and supporting operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics

• Conduct visual inspections and onboard diagnostics during pre-diagnosis processes
• Review workshop job cards to ensure accuracy and full understanding of required work
• Identify deviations, irregularities, and unusual wear and tear, and report findings to the Workshop Foreman

Maintenance and Repairs

• Perform all maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications and scheduled maintenance plans
• Carry out repairs in line with approved flat-rate standards
• Attend to office-hour and after-hour breakdowns as required
• Inspect, dismantle, repair, and replace faulty components with new or reconditioned parts
• Ensure all parts used, including engine oils and consumables, are correctly recorded on the job card
• Reset maintenance systems in accordance with internal procedures
• Reassemble dismantled parts and prepare any reusable components for return to suppliers
• Return unused or defective parts and accurately document completed work

Quality Control and Testing

• Compare vehicle condition against standard production configurations
• Conduct final inspections using appropriate testing and measuring equipment
• Ensure all repairs are completed correctly and vehicles are roadworthy and functionally reliable

Workplace Standards and Compliance

• Maintain professional conduct at all times
• Adhere to company dress code and Standard Operating Procedures
• Maintain daily housekeeping standards within the workshop
• Comply with all Health and Safety regulations and procedures
• Identify workplace hazards and address them under supervision and guidance

Operational Support

• Assist with relevant operational functions as required
• Contribute to maintaining a positive image of the workshop and service area

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician

Skills and Competencies

• Strong technical knowledge of commercial vehicle systems and components
• Ability to perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs accurately
• Understanding of basic business principles within a workshop environment
• Ability to interpret customer and operational requirements
• Strong attention to detail and quality standards
• Ability to identify hazards and apply basic Health and Safety procedures under supervision
• Professional communication and customer service skills
• Ability to work effectively within a team and follow structured processes
