Panelbeater – Value Logistics
Purpose of the Job
The Panelbeater is responsible for repairing and restoring the bodywork of heavy-duty trucks that have been damaged through accidents, wear and tear, or other incidents. This role requires specialised skills in metalwork, welding, and finishing techniques to restore both the structural integrity and appearance of vehicles to high industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Damage Assessment and Parts Coordination
- Review job cards and quotations to determine the required scope of work
- Inspect damaged trucks to assess structural, body, mechanical, or interior damage
- Support the Estimator by providing input on repair timelines and cost estimates
- Compare the vehicle condition with the job card to determine necessary parts
- Identify any additional damage not listed on the job card
- Order required parts and follow up on outstanding orders when necessary
- Confirm that ordered parts are correct and free from damage
- Fabricate replacement parts when original components are unavailable or uneconomical to replace
- Ensure all parts that require painting are sent to the paint shop with the vehicle
Repair and Assembly Quality
- Carefully dismantle damaged truck sections to access affected areas
- Reassemble repaired or replaced components to ensure proper fit and functionality
- Straighten and reshape bent panels and frames using specialised tools such as hammers, dollies, and hydraulic presses
- Cut and weld replacement panels or frames when required
- Repair or replace damaged truck body parts including fenders, doors, bumpers, and other structural components
- Ensure accurate panel alignment and proper fitment of all parts
- Perform MIG, TIG, or oxy-acetylene welding to join metal components securely
- Sand, grind, and smooth repaired areas to achieve a seamless finish
- Apply primers, paints, and protective coatings to restored surfaces
- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets required quality standards
- Perform final roadworthiness checks before vehicle release
Team Coordination and Professional Conduct
- Conduct quality checks on work completed by assistants
- Guide, train, and support assistants to ensure effective performance
- Work closely with the Foreman, Estimator, Manager, and CPD to maintain an efficient workflow
- Maintain, calibrate, and care for panel beating tools and equipment
- Ensure productivity and efficiency levels meet workshop standards
- Assist with other operational duties when required
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Qualified Panel Beater with Trade Test and Red Seal Certification
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in panel beating, preferably working with heavy-duty trucks
Skills Requirements
- Strong expertise in metalwork, welding, and fabrication techniques
- Proficiency in operating panel beating tools and workshop equipment
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and repair manuals
- Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy materials and equipment
- High attention to detail to ensure precise repairs and quality workmanship
- Ability to assess damage accurately and develop effective repair solutions
- Creativity in fabricating parts or implementing alternative repair methods
- Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues
