Purpose of the Job
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for managing and controlling the end-to-end picking process and inventory within the warehouse. This role oversees both permanent and outsourced pickers, ensuring all processes are followed consistently, productivity targets are met, and customer orders are picked accurately and on time. The Warehouse Supervisor drives efficiency, enforces discipline, maintains safety and compliance standards, and supports the wider warehouse team to deliver reliable, cost-effective service.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Supervise, guide, and support both permanent and outsourced pickers.
- Maintain a controlled, disciplined, and efficient working environment.
- Conduct daily check-ins with staff to monitor progress, productivity, and challenges.
- Ensure all picking follows agreed processes, system-driven procedures, and warehouse standards.
- Conduct random accuracy checks to ensure correct items and quantities are picked.
- Monitor picking output to meet productivity targets.
- Coordinate with warehouse planners to align picking with dispatch schedules.
- Monitor equipment such as pallet jacks and handheld scanners to ensure proper functioning.
- Ensure all administrative processes within the picking area are accurately followed.
- Report daily on productivity, progress, delays, challenges, and accuracy levels.
- Document staff performance and any deviations from process.
Warehouse Supervision
- Lead, train, and motivate picking staff.
- Enforce company policies, Health & Safety regulations, and disciplinary procedures.
- Conduct regular team meetings, toolbox talks, and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory.
- Track KPIs including order accuracy, picking timelines, and stock discrepancies.
- Maintain documentation for internal and external audit compliance.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure adherence to occupational health and safety standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
Housekeeping
- Keep the warehouse clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Ensure aisles, picking areas, and storage zones are free of obstructions and hazards.
- Implement and enforce daily housekeeping schedules for staff.
- Monitor compliance with hygiene and safety standards, including proper disposal of waste and packaging.
- Conduct regular inspections to address potential risks or cleanliness issues.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and PPE are stored correctly and in good condition.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field (preferred)
- Picking experience within a warehouse environment
- Some supervisory or team-leader experience
Skills Requirements
- Strong supervisory and people-management skills
- Knowledge of WMS, Microsoft Office, and inventory control practices
- Good literacy and numerical ability
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- System-driven and process-oriented mindset
