Job Description
The Category Buyer is responsible for compiling and executing category plans in alignment with company strategy, objectives, and category group guidelines. This role optimises the performance of assigned categories through clear, customer-focused plans, covering assortment, format, and margin strategies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 3–5 years’ retail and category management experience
  • Knowledge of General Merchandise within relevant categories advantageous
  • Strong financial acumen; SAP knowledge is an added advantage

Key Responsibilities

Negotiation

  • Develop and present well-reasoned, factual arguments to build support and secure agreement in negotiations
  • Anticipate objections, manage conflicts diplomatically, and engage in counter-negotiations when required
  • Maintain professional relationships and control emotions during complex discussions

Category Strategy

  • Develop and recommend strategies targeting category-specific growth
  • Evaluate merchandising plans and adjust based on performance impact
  • Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and reduce costs

Category Performance

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of assigned categories, industry trends, and competitive environment
  • Execute tactical buying plans aligned with category growth strategies and overall business objectives

Supplier Relations

  • Communicate with suppliers to monitor performance against agreed financial and operational targets
  • Hold suppliers accountable for results and implement contingency plans to address performance gaps
  • Build and maintain strong, confident relationships with key suppliers

Private Brand Strategy and Development

  • Implement and execute Private Brand strategies within the category
  • Ensure alignment of Private Brand initiatives with overall business and category objectives

Merchandise Knowledge

  • Apply knowledge of Pick n Pay merchandise, promotions, pricing, and sales to enhance category decisions
  • Develop merchandising solutions to drive financial performance
  • Track and leverage industry trends and market insights to influence category outcomes
