Job Description
Anova is seeking a dedicated Paralegal to strengthen community-based human rights interventions. The Paralegal will provide legal and strategic support to Human Rights Ambassadors/Reactors, review and assess human rights violation cases, provide guidance on next steps, and ensure appropriate referrals or escalations to NACOSA Legal Officers. The role also involves stakeholder engagement, facilitating sensitisation and human rights training, and mentoring field staff to ensure access to justice and effective case management.
Key Responsibilities
Human Rights Advocacy and Networking
- Develop and implement quarterly advocacy plans for the district.
- Apply harm reduction principles in all advocacy activities.
- Advocate for the rights of adolescent girls, young women, and key/vulnerable populations.
- Engage with communities and district stakeholders, including clinics, Dept. of Home Affairs, SAPS, and DSD.
- Identify service gaps for AGYW and ensure strategies are included in advocacy plans.
- Build and maintain relationships with legal aid organisations, social workers, SAPS units, and service providers.
- Represent the programme professionally at meetings and stakeholder engagements.
Sensitisation and Training
- Identify key stakeholders for sensitisation workshops in subdistricts and districts.
- Conduct quarterly workshops on human rights awareness.
Legal Information, Advice, and Referral
- Support and monitor the collection of human rights violation cases.
- Assist community members in drafting affidavits, statements, and complaints.
- Provide guidance on remedies and next steps within the Paralegal’s scope.
- Facilitate referrals to Legal Aid South Africa, the Human Rights Commission, Department of Justice, shelters, and psychosocial or health services.
- Follow up with clients and service providers to ensure cases are resolved.
- Escalate complex or uncertain cases to NACOSA Legal Officers for further review.
Gender-Based Violence Response
- Provide trauma containment support following WHO LIVES guidelines when necessary.
- Ensure immediate care and referrals for GBV survivors, including access to Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) within 72 hours.
- Support survivors in safety planning, SAPS case opening, and court processes.
Support and Supervision of Human Rights Ambassadors/Reactors
- Ensure quality control of all case documentation.
- Train Ambassadors/Reactors on human rights SOPs and data tools.
- Assess submitted cases for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate categorisation.
- Provide technical support for case documentation, follow-up, and closure.
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Paralegal Studies, Human Rights, or a related legal/social justice field.
- Accredited community paralegal training or recognised short courses in human rights, legal rights awareness, or access to justice preferred.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in lobbying, advocacy, human rights, or programming in public health or HIV-related fields.
- Experience in conducting training sessions and workshops.
